How to prepare for a Marine Survey?

|
1. If required, arrange for lift out of the water with marina and a captain for sea trial.
2. When the vessel is stored out of water the surveyor typically starts with the out of water inspection followed by the boat being launched for sea trial. When the inspection starts with the boat in the water the sea trial can be conducted in route to the crane.
3. Provide the surveyor with specific information such as the vessel’s listing, exact location, and address/time of marina for lift out, as well as name and contact information of all parties to be present for survey.
4. Present a clean vessel free of clutter and personal belongings as much as reasonably possible. All equipment included in the sale should be readily accessible, personal belongings should preferably be removed from the vessel prior to inspection. Storage compartments and the bilge should be cleared and cleaned to allow for through inspection.
5. Have keys to equipment, cabin, and lockers available.
6. Service records and vessel documentation should be available for the surveyor to review.
7. Shore power access and shore power cord will be needed to test AC electrical power.
8. Fuel and water tanks should have adequate levels to conduct testing.
9. The engine should only be started once the surveyor is present and from a “cold” start.
